I’m back in my building after staying a bit late at my desk, and it’s safe to say I learned more about dealing with suppliers and clients and other fickle manufacturing-related issues over Happy Hour at Smart Design than I’ve learned in two years of school. Over Happy Hour.
To be brief, the last four days have been rather hectic, with six projects already underway (not including an “intern project” due by summer’s end), each requiring at least some time working with rough physical modeling in the shop. It’s been good to be so busy, and I’m quickly learning that the designers who work at Smart pay little distinction to whether or not I’m a full-time designer there. Many times I have been asked for my opinion on what seem to be major design decisions, and it’s unsettling and extremely cool to be potentially giving usable input on something that could be actually produced.
I’m more tired than I’ve ever been in a while (due in part to the crazy heat and humidity plus walking everywhere), but it feels really great to be so productive. I love the amount of work I’m receiving, and everyone here exemplifies traits every designer should strive to emulate.
I’m tired and I’ll stop now, sorry for the short post! I’ll be writing more about work here every week or so.
